I took an absolutely gorgeous walk on Tuesday, which ended up 10 km long and took more than three hours. I struck out up a hill from my village, and decided to follow this path, then that path, to see where it led… I made some great discoveries, including Bladon Heath, but ended up with a longer walk than I bargained for! It just felt so good to get out of the house, into the sun, and breathing the fresh, warm air.
One of the things I love most about living in the UK is the vast network of public footpaths which crisscross the nation. Due to public right of way, private land owners must allow walkers to cross their land if a traditional footpath runs through their property; in return, walkers promise to keep to the paths and not interfere with livestock.
The entire country is mapped by the Ordnance Survey, which is part of the Civil Service. I have their maps for the area uploaded on my phone and you can see that they record every little possible trail– for every inch of the country. It’s such an amazing resource.
I got a bit mucky, but luckily I was wearing my heavy duty waterproof hiking boots and waterproof Craighopper trousers!
