Glorious Weekend

What a gorgeous weekend! It was properly warm, no-jacket-warm, out all weekend, with almost all sun and today, a really exciting wind that kept my blood pumping. Yesterday, I tried to venture out for a walk down through the south fields, along the canal, and down to Port Meadow, but it was so busy with other walkers I was forced to turn back. I made it from one field, the biggest, and into a second smaller, when I was halted, waiting, in the middle of the field, watching the three turnstiles. These are the metal type of turnstiles, with proper latches on the gates, that each person has to lift and open as they go through. I waited for a gap between people so I wouldn’t be less than 6 feet away from anyone, and the longer I waited, the more I realised a walk was simply not going to be possible… There were just too many people out. It was like Grand Central. Thankfully, I had found my camping germicide, and so I disinfected my hands after every turnstile, and made my way home as quickly, and safely, as I could.

Today I spent the entire day in the garden. I built my new lawn mower, only having to undo and redo one piece of the construction due to screw up. I kept the mow height on the highest setting because it was the first mow after a long winter, and I’ll do another run-round later this week. It is, however, looking really good already.

My front garden– tulips are coming along to join the daffodils and grape hyacinth!

I’ve mowed the back garden as well, but no pictures yet. I’m going to sort out the back garden a bit more before I put it on the internet! But today was very successful– breaking down tomato, aubergine/eggplant, and cucumber plants that I was too ill to deal with at the end of last year, spreading the used compost on the bed, weeding, working hard on cleaning up the patio, which was full of weeds and (somehow) mud, and rearranging how things are set up for the coming growing year to maximise sunlight for plants and shade for myself. It’s still partially in piles and stacks, so more pictures will come after it’s all sorted.

I also did laundry and hung it on the line in the sun and wind, where it dried in under an hour, even the towels. I had cacio e pepe for dinner, with some lovely new wine from my recently delivered wine box. It’s not all loveliness– I had a chat with a friend whose close friends are in hospital, both of them with COVID-19, one of them in the ICU with poor chances of recovery. I chatted with a friend in Spain, as well, who is stuck in a flat without any outside areas like a balcony or a patio, and in Spain no outside exercise is allowed at the moment. It’s grim out there, but in here, I’m working on making a calm oasis of coziness inside, beauty outside, and everywhere virus free.
